American vs. Korean Ginseng

Posted by Groupthought on

Ginseng is one of the most popular herbs that have been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Ginseng is a root that is known for its energy boosting properties. The two main varieties of ginseng are American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and Korean Ginseng (Panax Ginseng). Both contain an active ingredient called ginsenosides, which can help prevent and treat inflammation. Here are some of their differences:

American Ginseng
  • American Ginseng is found in America and Canada.
  • Known to increase “yin” energy, which is used to cool down the body during fever or hot weather.
  • More relaxing and sedative, it can help the management of depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
  • Mild “qi” boosting effect, due to lower ginsenoside content.

Korean Ginseng

  • Korean Ginseng is commonly found in Korean and North Eastern China.
  • Known to increase “yang” energy, because it is warmer in nature and therefore used in colder weather and helps improve blood circulation.
  • Invigorating and stimulating, Korean Ginseng has the ability to enhance cognitive processes including learning and memory.
  • Stronger “qi” boosting effect, due to higher ginsenoside content.

Both American and Korean Ginseng can be taken in small amounts in the morning for energy. Although taking Ginseng is safe in moderation, consult your doctor before including any dietary supplements in your health regimen.
